Plus, crafting your own means you can customise them exactly to your liking.
Ready to dive in? Let’s break it down.
Body butter bars, or massage or lotion bars, are anhydrous products—meaning they contain no water.
The beauty of this is that they don’t require preservatives, making them a more natural and straightforward skincare option.
Adding a dash of Vitamin E (around 1%) gives your bar stability and boosts its skin-loving benefits.
Since these bars lack water, there’s no need to worry about emulsifiers or stabilisers. Instead, all your ingredients—like butters, oils, and waxes—come together in one easy step.
Be sure to avoid water-based ingredients, as they can cause separation. Similarly, colours tend not to blend well, often clumping together and creating an uneven appearance.
This recipe creates a deeply hydrating body butter bar that’s gentle enough for everyday use.
This bar is a luxurious treat for dry skin, offering the perfect balance of firmness and smooth application.
One of the keys to crafting an excellent massage bar is nailing the consistency. The ratios of butters, waxes, and oils determine the bar’s hardness. For example:
Cocoa Butter: With a hardness score of 10, this butter creates firm bars but may feel too stiff. Pair it with softer butters like shea or mango for a more balanced texture.
Shea Butter: Softer and more pliable, shea butter adds nourishing properties and is incredibly barrier-restoring, as this study shows, but can make bars too soft if overused.
A general rule of thumb is to use about 25% soft butter in your formula for a lotion bar that’s firm when stored but melts effortlessly upon contact with skin.
Experimentation is key—play around with different combinations until you achieve your ideal blend.
Body butter massage bars lie in their versatility.
You can customise the ingredients to suit your preferences and skin type. Want a more decadent bar for winter dryness? Add more cocoa butter. Looking for a lighter feel?
Swap out heavier oils for almond or fractionated coconut oil. You can even get creative with scents and additives.
Try a touch of vanilla for a sweet treat, or add ground coffee for an exfoliating effect.
Essential oils like lavender, peppermint, or tea tree offer both fragrance and skin benefits for those who want to stay natural.
Body butter bars are more than just skincare—they’re an experience.
From their nourishing ingredients to the tactile joy of applying them, these bars offer a luxurious way to pamper your skin.
They’re simple to make, endlessly customisable, and a perfect project for anyone looking to elevate their skincare game.
So why not give it a try?
Lotion bars are the key to smooth, glowing skin, whether you’re soothing dry skin or indulging in a DIY spa day.
Grab your favourite butters and oils, get creative, and let your skin soak up the goodness.

Hello! Thank you for the tutorial! Can emulsifying wax, candilla wax or other vegan wax be used here? I am trying to offer more plant based options.
Hi absolutely, you just need to experiment.
Thank you,this is very informative.
Hi, in the Luxury bar you mention that the avocado butter melts quickly but that is not in the list of ingredients. I’d like to try that. What is the correct amount?
Thanks
Hey Samantha,
Great recipes, thank you. Hey got a question, can we replace beeswax with soy wax?
Jason
If you are making candles yes, but if you are creating something a natural product for the skin I wouldn’t recommend it!
The problem with soy wax is that it is usually processed with paraffin oil, fragrances and dyes! Hope that helps x
