No, you’re not imagining it.
Your glow can fade faster than it should.
One day it’s fine… the next it’s dryness, dullness, lines, and skin that won’t behave.
And honestly? It can really mess with your confidence.
But here’s the good news — youthful, healthy skin is absolutely possible.
It just takes a holistic approach, both topically and internally.
So join me as I share six holistic ways to support truly healthy skin.
As the founder of The Naked Chemist, and with over 30 years of hands-on experience working with the skin, my practice has always been rooted in one guiding belief:
Your skin is not separate from your body.
It is a living, responsive organ — deeply intertwined with your overall wellbeing, inflammation levels, hormones, stress, digestion, sleep, and daily habits.
With every client I see, my singular goal is the same: to achieve healthy, glowing, youthful skin that is balanced, resilient, and able to perform its natural functions optimally.
These holistic therapies form the very essence of my approach as a skincare specialist — not only in the treatments I offer, but in the products I formulate and sell.
When you identify and address the underlying barriers driving skin imbalance, you can restore your skin to optimal health without resorting to invasive procedures such as micro-needling or harsh, aggressive products.
Your skin and body possess a remarkable innate ability for self-healing. Sometimes, they need the right support, the right ingredients, and the right environment to do what they are designed to do.
Your body truly is a temple — and this perspective, combined with the healing potential of emerging therapies, is the foundation behind my approach to long-term skin health.
After reading this article, I hope this becomes your perspective too.
Holistic, as defined in the dictionary, relates to Holism.
It emphasises the importance of the whole and the interdependence of its parts.
In other words, it’s not just about treating a single symptom. It’s about understanding the deeper story behind it.
The development of holistic therapies is a testament to the inspiration and unwavering dedication of skilled holistic estheticians and knowledgeable healers.
It’s not just a “treatment” — it’s a comprehensive understanding of the interconnectedness of body, mind, and skin health.
So, let’s explore these practices in more detail:
Using naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants is an art form.
One that begins with an in-depth consultation, guiding the selection of essential oils tailored to the individual’s needs based on their unique healing properties.
Administered through breath work and absorption, these potent aromatic oils play a pivotal role in alleviating physical and emotional stress.
An aromatherapy massage is the perfect medium to deliver these oils to the skin, and once absorbed, they seamlessly integrate into the circulatory and nervous systems.
This delivery system delivers a potent physiological effect, aiding in the relief of stress, anxiety, depression, and a myriad of other conditions.
In Infact, I believe aromatherapy is more than just a treatment; it’s a thoughtful, personalised therapeutic journey to wellbeing.
As a clinical aromatherapist, I practise this art a lot. You can read more about my approach to aromatherapy and essential oils here.
Dr Edward Bach is the visionary behind the original herbal flower remedies. He believed that plants emit vibrations that help restore harmony.
Dr Bach created flower remedies as a direct way to treat the whole person through their emotions, helping balance their health holistically.
The theory is that unhappiness and fear contribute to ill health and that true healing means arresting disease at its emotional source – before the physical symptoms disappear.
Working with flower remedies resonates deeply with me, as they are integral to our formulations. Both Miracle Cleanse and Barrier Repair Balm are great examples of formulas that harness the potent power of native herbs and flowers.
With their healing, natural, floral essences, these products serve as poignant reminders to honour your body and take moments in your busy life to pause and breathe.
The therapeutic blends guide you to peace and wellbeing, allowing your skin and body to realign and find balance.
Homoeopathy, derived from the Greek words homeo (similar/likeness) and pathos (suffering or disease), involves administering minimal doses of substances that mimic the characteristic symptoms of illness.
The guiding principle is simple: “like cures like”.
Many people are drawn to homoeopathy as a gentle, natural therapeutic option that aims to support the body’s own healing process.
Chinese herbal medicine is rooted in the belief that the body is a small universe made up of interconnected systems.
It focuses on balancing the positive (Yang) and negative (Yin) principles to restore internal harmony.
Treatment is highly individualised, aiming to address each person’s unique imbalances. Acupuncture — using fine needles applied to specific points — helps free blocked chi (energy), supporting healthy skin and strengthening the mind-body connection.
Hydrotherapy involves water-based treatment designed to stimulate circulation by rapidly dilating and constricting blood vessels.
When combined with salts, water, and steam, hydrotherapy can help the body release impurities through sweat, flush out lactic acid, and promote a deep sense of cleansing and renewal.
Naturopathy operates on the belief that the human body is genetically coded for self-healing and carries an innate ability to restore itself under the right conditions.
The philosophy centres on prevention rather than attack, recognising that many diseases manifest only after a prolonged, often unnoticed, accumulation of internal imbalance.
Naturopaths acknowledge the multifaceted nature of disease, attributing symptoms to a blend of genetic, emotional, systemic, and environmental factors.
Treatments may include acupuncture, colon cleansing, detoxification, elimination diets, and lifestyle support — and understanding these key areas is essential to initiating a full-body restoration.
Central to this philosophy is the understanding that a single symptom can stem from multiple causes — and therefore deserves a whole-person approach.
As you can see, achieving beautiful skin is not always just about the products you use.
Especially if you are treating specific skin conditions, such as stubborn perioral dermatitis, which often require a genuinely holistic approach.
Having worked in the beauty and health industry for many years, I have seen how restorative these treatments can be — not only for the skin, but for the body and mind.
I believe optimal health is so much more than the absence of illness.
It is a positive feeling of vitality and energy that imparts an overall sense of wellbeing — helping us reconnect with the very essence of who we truly are.
Because skin issues often reflect what’s happening internally. Stress, inflammation, digestion, hormones, immune imbalance, and nervous system overload can all show up on the face — long before they show up on a blood test.
Yes, they can be incredibly supportive. While topical skincare is still essential, perioral dermatitis often improves best when the whole body is addressed — including triggers such as stress, gut disruption, hormonal shifts, and barrier breakdown.
Hydrotherapy has deep roots and real physiological benefits. Alternating hot and cold can stimulate circulation, support recovery, and help the nervous system shift out of stress mode — which can indirectly benefit inflammatory skin conditions.
Naturopathy is a broad system that focuses on removing obstacles to healing and supporting the body’s natural restoration through nutrition, detoxification, lifestyle, and functional support. Chinese herbal medicine is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine principles (Yin/Yang, chi, meridians) and often includes herbs and acupuncture.
Not at all. The best results often come from combining both: barrier-supportive skincare on the outside, and calming, restorative support on the inside. It’s not either/or — it’s a whole-skin, whole-body approach.
