We talk a lot about what goes into our skincare.
Wildcrafted botanicals, potent actives, and skin-identical ingredients.
But at The Naked Chemist, we believe what goes around comes around just as much.
Sustainability isn’t just a box we tick. It’s baked into everything we do, including packaging.
Because true skin health should never come at the cost of the planet.
The beauty industry creates over 120 billion units of packaging every year. Most of it? Non-recyclable.
Much of it? Single-use. And too often, it ends up polluting our oceans, choking marine life, or sitting in landfills for centuries.
That’s not the legacy we want to leave behind.
We’re a brand deeply rooted in nature. Our ingredients are sourced from pristine New Zealand landscapes. And it only feels right that our packaging reflects the same care and integrity.
So we’ve made a conscious decision to be different. To strip it back. To keep it naked.
Here’s how we make our packaging part of the solution, not the problem.
1. Less is More
We avoid flashy, over-engineered packaging. You won’t find elaborate boxes, shrink wraps, or gimmicky inserts here.
Our bottles and jars are functional, minimal, and intentionally unfussy. This means less waste for you and less waste for the environment.
2. Recyclable Where It Counts
We carefully select materials that can be easily recycled, such as glass and PET plastic.
We also avoid mixing materials (such as metal lids on plastic pots or plastic-coated cardboard) that can confuse recycling facilities or render items unrecyclable altogether.
This makes it easier for you to dispose of packaging responsibly—and easier on the planet, too.
3. Small Batches, Small Footprint
Our production is deliberately small-scale and local. This supports our ethos of freshness and quality and reduces emissions from mass production and long-haul freight.
We keep things simple, local, and clean—because every kilometre and every kilo counts.
4. Refill, Reuse, Repeat
We’re working on refillable solutions—especially for customer favourites like our serums and tonics.
In the meantime, we encourage our New Zealand customers to return clean, empty bottles to us for reuse.
This closed-loop system helps reduce virgin material use and extends the life cycle of each container.
It’s a small initiative with a big heart.
5. Low-Impact Labels
Our labels are clean and simple, using low-tox inks where possible. They’re designed to peel off easily to ensure recyclability.
You might notice we don’t use much print or colour. That’s not just a design decision—it’s a sustainability one.
Nature is our biggest inspiration. From New Zealand flax and mamaku to native manuka and harakeke—we owe everything to the land.
So, of course, we want to protect it.
We’re meticulous about sourcing wildcrafted, organic, and sustainably harvested ingredients, and we apply the same criteria to our packaging materials. A product doesn’t make the cut if it doesn’t serve your skin and the planet.
This is about creating harmony. Between the formula and the vessel. Between your skin and the earth.
Let’s be honest—sustainability in skincare is a work in progress. There’s still so much to learn, and innovations are constantly emerging.
But at The Naked Chemist, we don’t pretend to have all the answers. What we do have is a fierce commitment to transparency.
We’ll always tell you what we use, why we use it, and how you can help us do better. And as we discover more innovative, cleaner packaging and label solutions, you’ll be the first to know.
We’re here to redefine skincare—not just what goes on your face but what remains after the product is gone.
Because it’s not just about healthy skin, it’s about a healthier world.
So, the next time you reach for your cleanser or moisturiser, take a moment to appreciate the label, bottle, and packaging.
The Naked Chemist is designed carefully, made with intention, and chosen to tread lightly on this earth.
