10 Tips for the Perfect Eye Brow Shape

Of all facial features, eyebrows are amongst the most expressive.

They have the power to change the overall look of your face.

But eyebrows are often the most complicated.

These are common questions we are often asked:

  • Should my eyebrows be sisters or twins?
  • Should they be bushy or shaped?
  • How do I perfect my brows, anyway?

So, we created this go-to guide to help you accentuate your eye brow shape.

Mastering the technique

Shaping is a subtle art. After all, you don’t want brows that walk into the room before you; you want them to become your best feature.

Well-shaped eyebrows can ultimately enhance your facial features. If done correctly, it can help narrow your nose, lift your eyes, and make your face look symmetrical; it can open up your whole face.

Lifting, shaping, plucking, and waxing your brows are among the simplest ways to streamline your eyebrow look. The perfect eye brow shape has a natural arch cut through the brow bone.

However, don’t go overboard with your arch, or you could appear in a permanent state of surprise.

Correctly Tweezing Your Eyebrows

Getting the right tweezers is the key to minimising pain while plucking. So ensure your tweezers are slanted to help you achieve precision.

To get into the habit of successful tweezing, practice on the hairs of your arm to give yourself more confidence. First, lift the outer end of your eyebrow with your middle finger, then slip the tweezers underneath.

Grab the hair as close to the root as possible and then pull back gently. This way, you can check that you haven’t caught any skin and then pull away firmly and quickly toward the hair growth.

This will give a perfect lift in the right area, creating a quick, clean look without altering your eyebrows too much. Gently taper the brow at the end by plucking and neatening underneath.

Simply removing the less noticeable hairs under your eyebrows along the brow bone will make a huge difference, giving your eyes a natural lift.

Each of your eyebrows is usually different from the other – remember, “sisters, not twins” – look at them carefully and work on each one a little at a time.

Over Tweezing

Over-tweezing is a fact of life; we’ve all done it at some point.

But if you are an overly-enthused plucker, remember—time and eyebrow powder cure everything.

We appreciate your attempt to define the arch of your brow with colour, which can be daunting, but these guidelines for creating perfect eyebrows with colour will help give you the confidence you need.

To define the arch and fill in any gaps or empty spaces

  • We recommend that you begin your eye brow shape by using a pencil. This will give you more control over where you apply your colour and can also add definition in tiny areas.
  • Drawing a long line with your pencil doesn’t look natural, so it is far better to use shorter lines that follow the direction your hair grows naturally, then brush them out to soften them.
  • Dust them with powder using an angled brush to naturally deepen the colour.
  • The best technique is to colour only the hairs to ensure the apex of the brow is well-coloured, and to slightly diminish the colour as you follow the natural descent of the brow.
  • To finish, press translucent powder onto the brow using a firm eyeshadow brush to help make the colour last longer
  • . Brush the brows again to remove any excess powder, or set them with a gel mascara to tame unruly brows.

The Three-Stage Eye Brow Shape

Brow starting point: The start of your eye brow shape should line up with your nostrils.

Begin by imagining a line running from the corner of your nose to the inner corner of your eye; this will give you an idea of how far apart your brows need to be. Pluck any stray hairs that go beyond this point.

Brow arch point: Ideally, the point where you want to create your arch and lift your brow should be two-thirds of the way across your brow line. A good guide is to imagine a line running from the edge of your nose to the outer edge of your iris. This will give you a good idea of where your brow should arch.

End of brow: Just as you did in the previous steps, imagine a line running from the corner of your nose to the outer corner of your eye. Then, carefully tweeze your brows to ensure they don’t fall short of this line. Otherwise, your eyes will end up looking too severe.

Many clients come in with only a few weeks of growth, but more is better. If you’ve had a lot of removals, it may even take up to 12 months.

Whilst leaving them to grow out is painstaking, it’s the first thing you must do to get the best possible brow.

10 Eye Brow Shaping Tips

  • If you have a lot of space between the eyebrows and eyelids, removing too many hairs will diminish your brow’s frame, making it look disconnected from your eyes. This is usually done to give the appearance of more lift; however, we recommend keeping a fuller brow in the front and tapering upwards for a lifting effect. This will create a naturally lifted look that is more flattering to the eye.
  • Avoid magnifying mirrors, as they usually make you take off too much hair.
  • If you’re trying to grow or maintain your eyebrows, keep moisturisers, sunscreens, brow gels, and anything oil-based away from the eyebrow area, as oil can inhibit hair growth.
  • We are not fans of waxing; you can’t be as precise as you can with tweezing, which pulls too much on the skin.
  • We recommend a professionally done brow tint before shaping; this is helpful because some hairs are lighter than the rest, and tinting brings them all together and gives you much more to work with. We recommend a professionally done brow tint rather than attempting it yourself at home.
  • In between appointments, we ask our clients not to tweeze. That way, the process can continue, and we can focus on growing in specific areas.
  • If the eye brow shape process is too painful, apply a gentle anaesthetic.
  • Once you’ve plucked your eyebrows, use a spoolie or clean mascara wand to brush your brows upwards. Any hairs that stick up above the brow line can be trimmed with a small pair of nail scissors.
  • Apply witch hazel to the area once you’ve finished, especially if it’s red or irritating.
  • To complete your brows, use a pencil to draw short, hair-like strokes that mimic the natural look of your brows. You can get fancy by using a lighter colour at the head and a darker one at the arch, giving your brows a contouring effect.

Common Eye Brow Shape Mistakes

When styling your eye brows, getting them wrong is all too easy. Below, we describe some of the common eyebrow mistakes many people make:

Over-plucking: An over-plucked brow is quite unflattering; it can make your nose look more extensive, and your eyes seem as though they are set too wide apart. This is an easy mistake, especially if you know where your arch should be. To rectify this problem, you must fill in your eyebrows with a pencil where the hairs should have been, and wait to shape them once they have grown back.

The Triangle Brow: This eye brow shape is created by lifting the brow dead in the centre of each eye. The downhill slant you start at the end of the brows can make your eyelids look puffy and like you are permanently frowning.

The Tadpole: This is when your eye brow has been over-plucked, starting thick nearest the nose and suddenly changing into a pencil-thin line. This gives a “lamb-chop” effect and can make you look quite severe. It is easy to make this mistake because the hairs at the inner corner of the brows grow upwards, whilst the rest grow outwards. Fill the gap between the thick and thin parts to smooth the sharp angle.

Plucking above the brow: This can destroy your brow’s natural arch. You also don’t want to over-emphasise the brow, as it can give you a permanent expression; instead, aim for a natural line by lifting the brow slightly at the point just on the outer side of the pupil.

Interesting Fact

Besides being our biggest beauty asset, did you know that your eyebrows also serve a purpose?

The hair above your eyes helps to keep moisture out—the natural arch of the brow channels water and sweat to the sides of your eyes.

To Conclude. The naked truth

Eyebrows are more than just facial features; they’re a statement.

They can shape, lift, and define your look, making them one of the most important aspects of your beauty routine.

But mastering the art of eyebrow shape takes patience and technique. From finding the right tools to understanding your natural arch, every step is crucial in achieving the perfect brow.

Remember, your eyebrows don’t need to be identical twins, but more like well-matched sisters.

Focus on accentuating their natural shape, maintaining balance, and avoiding common pitfalls like over-plucking.

With careful shaping, tweezing, and filling, you can enhance your facial features, open your eyes, and achieve a natural look.

FAQ on Eye Brow Shape

How do I find the right shape for my eyebrows?

The ideal eyebrow shape typically aligns with your facial structure. Start by identifying your brow’s natural arch, which should be two-thirds of the way across your brow line. Use your nose as a reference for where your brows should begin and end. Aim for a shape that lifts and balances your face.

Should I pluck, wax, or thread my eyebrows?

Plucking is excellent for precision and control, especially if you’re shaping at home. Waxing can remove more hair at once but may not be as accurate, while threading is a good option for quick removal with a defined shape.

How do I prevent over-plucking my eyebrows?

Avoid magnifying mirrors, which can lead to removing too much hair. Pluck only in natural light, follow your brow’s natural shape, and take breaks to assess your progress. Removing a little hair at a time is more straightforward than fixing overplucked brows.

What should I do if I have overplucked my eyebrows?

If you’ve over-plucked, give your brows time to grow back, which can take several weeks or months. In the meantime, use a brow pencil or powder to fill in sparse areas and mimic natural hairs. Avoid further tweezing until the hair has regrown.

How do I make my eyebrows look fuller?

To achieve fuller brows, use a brow pencil to draw short, hair-like strokes toward your natural hair growth. Use brow gels or powders to add volume and set your brows in place. Tinting is another option for darkening lighter hair and creating a fuller appearance.
