Safety and Allergy Guidelines
Please read these before using any Naked Chemist product.
1. Patch test before you start
Always patch test a new product before using it regularly.
Where to test
- Test in two places: somewhere hidden, and somewhere close to where you’ll actually use it
- Face products — the side of your neck, or behind your ear
- Body products — behind your knee, or the inside of your elbow
- Make sure the skin is clean, and no other products are on it
How to test
- Apply a small amount to each area
- Leave it. Reactions usually appear within 24 to 72 hours
- If you see redness, itching, swelling or a rash, don’t use the product
2. Sensitivity to natural ingredients
Our products are made largely from naturally derived ingredients. Natural does not mean non-reactive — plant extracts and essential oils can cause sensitivity, occasionally in people who have never reacted to anything before.
If a product stings, burns, itches or causes redness that doesn’t settle within a few minutes, stop using it.
3. Allergies to nuts, seeds and fruit
Our formulations contain oils and butters derived from nuts, seeds and fruit, and some contain algae.
If you have a nut, seed or fruit allergy, read the full ingredient list before you buy. It’s on every product page and on the pack itself. If you’re unsure whether an ingredient is safe for you, email us at info@thenakedchemist.com, and we’ll tell you exactly what’s in it.
If your allergy is severe or anaphylactic, speak to your doctor or allergist before using any new skincare, ours included.
4. Active ingredients
Products containing retinoids, vitamin C or exfoliating acids need a slower introduction. Start two or three times a week and build up.
These actives also make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Wear sunscreen every day while you’re using them.
5. Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding, speak to your doctor or midwife before using any product containing retinoids (vitamin A). Retinoids are generally not recommended during pregnancy.
In our range, that means A+
If you’re unsure whether a product is suitable, email us at info@thenakedchemist.com before you use it, and we’ll tell you what’s in it.
Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and mineral sunscreen are all generally considered safe during pregnancy, which is why they feature in most of our routines.
6. External use only
All our products are for external use only. Do not swallow them.
Avoid the eye area unless a product is specifically intended for it. If a product gets into your eyes, rinse thoroughly with cool water.
Don’t apply our products to broken, weeping or infected skin.
Keep out of reach of children.
7. What our products are, and aren’t
Our products are cosmetics. They aren’t medicines, and they don’t claim to cure or prevent any disease or medical condition.
Nothing here replaces advice from your doctor, dermatologist or other health professional. See our full disclaimer.
