Around a year ago, my skin issues began with a seemingly minor blemish.

Over time, this blemish evolved into fluid-filled bumps that encircled my mouth and nose.

Initially, I mistook it for common skin problems like acne or rosacea, but its symptoms kept changing.

The rash extended to the creases of my nose, causing redness, burning and persistent itchiness.

One day, I woke up to find my skin peeling and flaking, which led to a sense of alarm.

Seeking answers, I promptly scheduled an appointment with my doctor.

After a thorough examination, she diagnosed me with periorbital dermatitis.

I’d never heard of this condition before but was grateful I had an answer.

My doctor wanted to prescribe another course of antibiotics, but I was reluctant and knew there had to be a better way.

This is my journey with perioral dermatitis.

My Periorbital Dermatitis Journey

My doctor explained that periorbital dermatitis is common among young women; I’m 25, which puts me squarely in the middle of the demographic for perioral dermatitis.

I was prescribed antibiotics, and although I wouldn’t say I liked taking them, my rash disappeared within a week, and I was relieved.

Fast-forward six weeks, and it came back with a vengeance, and I was devastated; the tiny red bumps had become a full-blown, inflamed rash around my mouth, nose, and chin, burning, itching, and flaking continuously.

This was when my skin condition became one of my life’s most significant catalysing events.

It sparked months of detective work as I tried to decipher what had caused it and why I couldn’t shift it.

In the beginning, no theory or remedy was too ridiculous.

Periorbital Dermatitis Questions:

  • was it the fluoride in my tap water? I went fluoride-free and bought a water filter
  • was I reacting to my makeup? I switched brands immediately
  • was I possibly allergic to certain foods? I eliminated food groups and kept a diary
  • could it be the face wash I was using? I went sulphate-free.

The questions never ended, and the rash continued to swing between stages of stubbornness and anger.

That was until I came across the Naked Chemist. Their site had a lot of credible information, and I found their free ebook very insightful, so I contacted Samantha and her team.

They were extremely helpful and explained the importance of taking a two-pronged approach, both internal and topical, to my perioral dermatitis treatment:

Step 1: Scale back on topicals

My first step

This was to strip back my skincare routine because, as it was explained to me, treating periorbital dermatitis is an elimination game.

I diligently followed these essential steps:

  1. Avoided topical steroids
  2. Eliminated fluoride in toothpaste
  3. Stayed away from heavy creams containing emulsifiers and oils
  4. Avoided occlusive ingredients like beeswax
  5. Removed personal care products with sodium lauryl sulfate
  6. Steered clear of harsh ingredients such as alcohols, vitamin C, and peels
  7. I avoided products with essential oils and fragrances, including citral, linalool, and geraniol, which can provoke skin inflammation.

As time passed, I discovered that toothpaste was a significant trigger for my condition, and even my beloved lip salve had a beeswax base, another common trigger.

When I applied the cream, my skin occasionally burned and developed crusts. Samantha clarified that emulsifiers in creams were the culprit.

Consequently, I transitioned to soothing water-based serums and gel moisturisers, providing my skin with immediate relief.

Step 2: Embrace an internal approach

My journey led me to a profound realisation of the influence of hormones and stress on my perioral dermatitis flare-ups.

I noticed a pattern where my skin would often worsen before my periods, and I eventually received a diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome.

This was important given my history of extensive antibiotic use.

Surprisingly, I had never associated kefir with skin health, but it makes sense when you consider that our skin is our body’s largest organ and is closely linked to the gut.

My Results

Around week 12, I encountered a temporary relapse in skin inflammation, which was a bit unsettling. However, I was reassured that such fluctuations were a normal healing process. I then redoubled my commitment to an alkaline diet and daily kefir intake.

By the time I reached the 24-week mark, my skin had made remarkable progress, with an impressive 75% clearance and a vibrant appearance.

It has been nearly a year since I began my journey to heal my skin, and I can confidently declare that it has completely recovered.

The blemishes, redness, burning, and bumps that once plagued me are now a thing of the past.

Reflecting on that challenging period, I recall my doctor’s advice: to learn how to manage perioral dermatitis, especially if antibiotics proved ineffective.

Yes, it does take hard work, determination and lots of trial and error to eliminate periorbital dermatitis. Still, I am an example that it is possible to turn your skin around, so don’t despair.

There is no instant, miraculous remedy for perioral dermatitis, but I firmly believe you can restore your skin’s health with dedication and thorough exploration of the root causes.

The journey requires hard work, determination, and a fair share of trial and error.

Still, my own experience proves that it is possible to reverse the effects of perioral dermatitis. So, do not lose hope.

Hi sure can you email us at for a list of supplements that will help heal your skin you can send a photo there to us also. Everything is about simplicity when treating PD because its an elimination game. So the products used were a black soap we sell in the clinic, H20 hydrating skin shot. Clarify Balance & calm gel and Fortify barrier repair cream. Once healing was activated about 6 weeks in to the treatment she moved onto B+ skinshot and Xcell barrier repair oil. With PD avoid anything to occlusive and thick with butters in as this will feed the breakouts….
