It is essential when making your own homemade facial scrubs that you avoid exfoliating ingredients such as walnut shells – they are not completely spherical in shape. They can cause tiny micro-tears in the skin, disrupting the protective barrier function, leading to inflammation.

Lemon is another popular ingredient used in scrubs that are just too stripping for the skin. This article is an interesting read, that looks at what can happen to the skin if it is over-exfoliated.

When selecting the best homemade facial scrub recipes, think about what is gentle and natural. You will also have to consider your particular skin type and/or the skin concern you want to target.

Those with oily skin or who are breakout-prone, for instance, should consider clay-based exfoliants with antibacterial and antimicrobial essentials such as tea tree. If you have a combination or normal skin type, coffee grounds and geranium essential oils provide a balancing, gently exfoliating action.

Those with dry or sensitive skin should go for gentler exfoliators that are also nourishing, such as oatmeal or bran.
